Mountain

Wednesday 10 Mar 21 Salvation Mountain

Woke up at 8 and let the dogs out for their morning potty break. After brushing my teeth I drove back to the Burger King and had coffee.

After coffee I made breakfast of oats, toast and grapefruit. Then I drove to the Sam's Club and filled up. Gas was $2.79.

I got on I-8 headed West and at first there was a strong cross wind but it soon turned into a head wind. I drove on until I reached Highway 111 and I took it headed North so then I had a strong cross wind again. I stopped at a small lake named Ramer and had a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch with chips and half avocado. After lunch Wiggin and I went for a hike. There were a lot of birds on the lake. Hundreds of seagulls. When we got back to the RT Wiggin was covered in stickers off course.

I got back on the road and drove until I reached Salvation Mountain. The mountain was created by Edward Knight. He spent most of his adult life creating and maintaining it. It was his hope that through the message of "God is Love" which is prominently  painted on the mountain, people would find salvation. Edward thought that all religions made it too complicated to find Jesus. He was probably at least partly correct. Edward left the mountain in 2011 and died in 2014.

After checking out the mountain I drove a little further and saw a sign "Welcome to Slab City". "It is the only free place left". From my perspective it is a good example of what happens when you get free stuff. It is the trashiest place I have ever seen.

I found a relatively clean place to park for the night. For dinner I cooked the rest of the beef with some sauteed onions. I had some rice on the side with toast.

After washing the dishes I got in bed and watched some videos. It was still very windy and it made the straps securing the kayak vibrate. They sung  a terribly out of tune song to me but ultimately I fell asleep.
